The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced several additions to its musician roster, effective with the 2012-13 season: WESLEY COLLINS, section viola; MICHAEL WINTER, third horn; KYLE BRIGHTWELL and MATTHEW McKAY, percussion. Also new to the BSO roster this season will be JAMES MARKEY, whose appointment to the John Moors Cabot bass trombone chair was announced by the orchestra last spring and appeared in Who’s In on May 8, 2012.
Wesley Collins, a 2007 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, goes to Boston from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where he was named to the viola section in May 2008. In Ohio he served as assistant principal viola with the Akron Symphony; as a member of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, and CityMusic Cleveland; and as a substitute musician with the Cleveland Orchestra.
Michael Winter, who assumes the Elizabeth B. Storer chair as third horn this fall, played for several seasons in Upstate New York, as acting principal horn at the Buffalo Philharmonic and as principal horn at the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as guest principal horn with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and has performed regularly with the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Boston Philharmonic, Boston Pops, and Boston Symphony Orchestra. A native of California, Winter holds a degree from Boston’s New England Conservatory.
Percussionist Kyle Brightwell, named to the Boston Symphony Orchestra Peter Lurie chair, has performed with the U.S. Navy Band, the U.S. Army Orchestra, Brazil’s Orquestra Sinfônica da Bahia, the New World Symphony, the Boston Symphony, and the Boston Philharmonic. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School and received further training at Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific Music Festival, and the National Orchestral Institute in Washington , D.C.
Matthew McKay joins Brightwell in the percussion section as holder of the Boston Symphony Orchestra Barbara Lee chair. For two seasons he was a percussionist with the Oregon Symphony in Portland, where he also played in the Third Angle new-music ensemble. McKay has performed with the BSO, Boston Pops, Boston Philharmonic, and the San Diego and Jacksonville symphony orchestra. A native of Virginia, he holds a bachelor’s degree from New England Conservatory and received additional training at Tanglewood Music Center, Spoleto Music Festival, Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, and the National Orchestral Institute.
