American conductor KAZEM ABDULLAH has been named Generalmusikdirektor of the City of Aachen in Germany, where he will succeed MARCUS BOSCH in leading the Sinfonieorchester Aachen. The post takes effect August 1, 2012. Abdullah has guest conducted the Oregon and Indianapolis symphony orchestras, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, and orchestras in Germany, Finland, and Mexico. He served as assistant conductor under James Levine at the Metropolitan Opera. Following training in clarinet at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, he served for two years as a fellow in the New World Symphony, then continued his studies at the University of Southern California. Abdullah’s conducting teachers have included Jorma Panula, Gustav Meier, Stefan Asbury, Bernard Haitink, and James Levine.
