KEN-DAVID MASUR has been appointed principal conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Masur was named music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra earlier this season, and will add his new role at the Civic Orchestra of Chicago with the beginning of the 2019-20 season. The Civic Orchestra of Chicago is a training ensemble for emerging professional musicians at the Negaunee Music Institute of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Masur will have three weeklong residencies at the Civic Orchestra and will lead the Civic Centennial Celebration Benefit Concert on March 1, 2020. At the Civic Orchestra, Masur will guide artistic planning, work with Chicago Symphony musicians who serve as coaches to Civic Orchestra members, and lead projects that engage diverse communities. Masur has led the Civic Orchestra of Chicago in concerts annually for the past three seasons. Currently concluding his associate conductorship with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he has previously led the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony, l’Orchestre National de France, and National Philharmonic of Russia, among others. Last summer Masur made his Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut at Ravinia, and this summer he will lead several events at Tanglewood.
