The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of two principal musicians, effective with the 2014-15 season: RALPH SKIANO, principal clarinet, and KEVIN BROWN, principal bass. Also beginning his duties this fall is JEREMY EPP, who accepted the position of principal timpani earlier in 2014.

Ralph Skiano has served as principal clarinet of the Richmond (Va.) Symphony since 2002, and of Des Moines Metro Opera since 2006. He has also appeared with the Cincinnati, Nashville, Virginia, and Kentucky symphony orchestras; the Washington National Opera; and such music festivals as Tanglewood and Oregon’s Britt Music Festival. Skiano holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Kevin Brown, 2009 winner of the International Society of Bassists Orchestral Competition, has performed as guest principal bass with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and as a section player with the Houston Symphony and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Brown has also performed at Tanglewood, Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and Le Domaine Forget in Quebec. A native of Minnesota, he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, and subsequently earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Rice University.
