The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has announced the African-American Orchestra Fellows for the 2018-19 season. MICHAEL GAUSE, trumpet, and ADAM SADBERRY, flute, will perform regularly with the DSO at Orchestra Hall and in the community, receive mentorship from tenured musicians, and participate in mock auditions to gain experience in the orchestra field. The DSO’s African-American Orchestra Fellowship was inaugurated in 1990. The program’s purpose is to enhance the career development of African-American orchestral musicians and the diversity of professional orchestras.
Hailing from Texas, trumpeter Michael Gause studied at the St. Mary’s Brass Camp, where he worked with John Carroll, principal trumpet of the San Antonio Symphony. Gause received a bachelor of music degree from the University of North Texas and performed with the Center for Chamber Music Brass Quintet. He performed with the Graduate Brass Quintet at Western Michigan University, where he received a master of music degree. Gause is currently a doctor of musical arts candidate at Michigan State University. As a soloist, Gause has performed at Michigan State University and was a semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition. Prior to the DSO fellowship, Gause was appointed third trumpet in Ohio’s Youngstown Symphony. He has also participated in the National Repertory Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival and School.
Adam Sadberry, originally from Montgomery, Texas, holds a bachelor of music in flute performance and a performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music. At Eastman, he recorded with the Eastman Wind Ensemble as principal flute and played principal piccolo with the Eastman Philharmonia. He received the 2017 Eastman/Links Scholarship. Sadberry’s experience includes performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Albany Symphony, Texas Festival Orchestra (at the Roundtop Festival Institute), American Wind Symphony Orchestra, and the World Youth Symphony Orchestra (at the Interlochen Arts Camp). Solo performances include the Cordancia Chamber Orchestra, the Clear Lake Symphony, and the Conroe Symphony. Sadberry has received awards and recognition in competitions from organizations including the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” YoungArts, National Association of Negro Musicians, and Houston Symphony League.
