The New York Philharmonic has announced the appointment of COURTNEY LEWIS as assistant conductor, effective in September 2014. He will succeed CASE SCAGLIONE, who has been promoted to associate conductor as of September. JOSHUA WEILERSTEIN, assistant conductor along with Scaglione since September 2011, will conclude his Philharmonic tenure at the end of the 2013-14 season. Lewis, 29, is founder and music director of the Discovery Ensemble, a Boston-based chamber orchestra, and since 2009 has held the associate conductor post at the Minnesota Orchestra. He has also served as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Lewis made his major American orchestral debut in 2008 with the St. Louis Symphony, and has since appeared with such orchestras as the Alabama, Atlanta, Milwaukee and National symphonies; the Los Angeles, Naples and Rochester philharmonics; the RTE National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, Ireland; and the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A native of Belfast, Lewis studied composition and clarinet at the University of Cambridge. After completing a master’s degree with a focus on the late music of György Ligeti, he attended the Royal Northern College of Music.
