JORGE MESTER has been named music director of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Boca del Rio, a newly formed organization in the city of Boca del Rio, Mexico. He served as music director of the Louisville Orchestra from 1967 to 1979, and again from 2006 to 2014; he becomes music director emeritus in September with the accession of Teddy Abrams as music director. Mester led California’s Pasadena Symphony from 1985 to 2010 and the Naples (Fla.) Philharmonic from 2004 to 2012. He was artistic director of the National Orchestral Association’s New Music Project from 1988 to 1992, and during the early 1980s directed the conducting department of The Juilliard School. Mester was on the conducting faculty of Aspen Music Festival and School from 1970 to 1991. Initially trained in viola, he served as violist in the Beaux-Arts Quartet before devoting his career to conducting.
