Massachusetts Governor Charles D. Baker has issued a proclamation declaring August 25 Leonard Bernstein Day, and the state’s House and Senate issued a joint resolution commemorating the Tanglewood Music Center and celebrating Bernstein’s one hundredth birthday. The Bernstein Centennial Celebration at Tanglewood concert on August 25 will take place on his actual birth date and will be broadcast on PBS on December 28. Artists from classical music, film, and Broadway will perform, hosted by Audra McDonald. Conductors will include Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons, Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart, Boston Pops Conductor Laureate John Williams, and San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus will perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and musicians from the New York Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the Pacific Music Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Festival. The program’s first half will focus on Bernstein as composer; the second half will spotlight works associated with him. On the morning of August 24, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons presented their first Facebook Live performance from Tanglewood, wishing Bernstein a happy 100th birthday with his daughter, Jamie Bernstein, and performing the Overture to Candide.
