The Austin Symphony Orchestra in Texas has announced details of its 2009-10 season, which opens on September 18 with a concert featuring pianists Leon Fleisher and his wife, Katherine Jacobson Fleisher. Music Director Peter Bay will conduct Mozart’s Symphony No. 31 (“Paris), and Leon Fleisher will perform Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D Major for the left hand; both Fleishers will perform the two-piano version of Mozart’s Concerto in F Major (K. 242). Violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg will perform on a January program of Samuel Barber’s music to celebrate his centennial, and two all-Russian February concerts will feature Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with pianist Barbara Nissman. Two programs will feature music of Mendelssohn, with Chee-Yun playing the Violin Concerto in October and the vocal ensemble Conspirare performing the Incidental Music from A Midsummer Night’s Dream in November. The season’s four pops programs will feature the Smothers Brothers, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, vocalist and actress Diahann Carroll, and Pink Martini. The Austin Symphony performs at the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts, which opened in March 2008.
