The BSO Academy, launched by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2010 to serve adult musicians from the community, will expand its reach beginning this summer with a new project called the BSO Music Educators Academy. Launched in partnership with the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and scheduled for July 7-12, it will give music educators the opportunity to play alongside BSO musicians and study with expert faculty to improve their practice and performance technique and develop skills in conducting, improvisation, arranging, and ensemble playing. BSO Music Educators Academy has been approved by the Maryland State Department of Education and will allow participants to obtain three graduate credits through UMBC. Also taking place July 7-12 is the inaugural BSO Summer Side-by-Side, in which non-professional adult musicians who play regularly in a community setting are invited to rehearse side-by-side with musicians from the BSO and those enrolled in the Music Educators Academy. Case Scaglione, assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic, will lead Side-by-Side participants in Wagner’s Overture to Tannhäuser, Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, culminating in a free public performance at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on July 12.
