In Wednesday’s (3/18) Baltimore Business Journal, Julekha Dash reports, “The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will keep its $25 tickets for the third year in a row in spite of financial pressures that have strained the organization in a sour economy. In addition, one-quarter of its premium orchestra level and box seats will sell for $50 next season. The BSO announced the pricing on Tuesday, along with its lineup of the 2009-2010 season. ‘In an effort to acknowledge the state of the economy and its impact on ticket buyers, the BSO is promising flat ticket prices for our subscribers,’ BSO CEO Paul Meecham said in a statement. … In January, the BSO laid off five employees, or about 8 percent of its staff, and eliminated several positions. The cuts, along with reductions in production, marketing and administrative budgets, have helped the orchestra save $1 million. The BSO is one of several organizations that could face cuts from the Maryland State Arts Council. Under the proposed cuts, the BSO could lose up to $450,000 in fiscal 2010.”
