Daniel Trahey, artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids year-round afterschool music program, was a featured speaker at TEDxBaltimore’s January 25 event at Morgan State University in Baltimore. His talk, one of several presentations relating to the TEDx conference’s theme of “Baltimore Rewired: Reconceptualizing the Urban Landscape,” focused on using music as a vehicle for social change for children in Baltimore City neighborhoods. Following Trahey’s talk, children from the OrchKids Orchestra performed. TEDxBaltimore is an independently organized event affiliated with the nonprofit organization TED, which for 26 years has offered a four-day conference annually devoted to “ideas worth spreading.” At the TED conference in 2009, José Antonio Abreu—founder of Venezuela’s El Sistema program—received a TED Prize of $100,000 to support the development of El Sistema-inspired programs in the U.S. and other countries.
