On June 29 at 5 p.m., California’s Berkeley Symphony will host Reflections Town Hall, a virtual convening to address the role of arts organizations in combating systemic racism. The conversation will focus on how the arts and culture sector can be a catalyst for positive social change. Panelists will include Joseph Young, Berkeley Symphony’s music director and resident conductor of the National Youth Orchestra-USA at Carnegie Hall; Michael Morgan, music director of the Oakland Symphony, Bear Valley Music Festival, and Gateways Music Festival; Berkeley Symphony Board President S. Shariq Yosufzai, whose career includes serving as vice president, Global Diversity, Chevron Corporation; Charles Chip McNeal, director of Diversity, Equity and Community for the San Francisco Opera; Jeremy Geffen, executive and artistic director of Cal Performances; Deborah L. Gould, M.D., who focuses on medical care delivery, compliance, ethics, and diversity and inclusion at the Permanente Medical Group Northern California; and marketing executive Jeff Benson, who is executive director, treasurer, and social-media marketer for SWAG Foundation, a fifteen-person vocal social-justice ensemble.
