In Sunday’s (4/29) Times of Malta, Sarah Carabott writes, “An Egyptian chamber orchestra made up entirely of blind women will be performing in Malta on May 6. The concert was meant to be held last year but was postponed because of the turmoil in Egypt. The Cairo-based Al Nour Wal Amal Blind Girls Chamber Orchestra will present a classical music concert—called ‘Love, Hope and Music’—at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. All proceeds will go towards helping the blind. The 38-piece orchestra is unique. It is composed of sightless women from all walks of life who study the notes in Braille and learn the musical pieces by heart. During the concert, the conductor tells them which piece they will be playing at what speed. … At the concert in aid of the Malta Society for the Blind, it will play classics by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, Bizet and also works by Joseph Vella and a few pieces by composers from the Middle East and India.”
