In Tuesday’s (11/30) Boston Globe, Jeremy Eichler writes, “James Levine will open the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood season on July 8 with an all-Italian program, including excerpts from Bellini’s ‘Norma’ and Verdi’s ‘I Lombardi.’ Later in the month he will lead the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and vocal soloists including baritone José van Dam in a concert performance of Debussy’s ‘Pelléas et Mélisande.’ These and other details of the 2011 Tanglewood season were announced today. Levine’s Tanglewood appearances will be his first since 2009, as recovery from back surgery forced him to withdraw from the full 2010 Tanglewood season. His additional concerts scheduled for next summer include performances of Berlioz’s Requiem during the opening weekend and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony later in the summer, in addition to an all-Sibelius program and an all-Ravel program. … Returning guest conductors include Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and Lorin Maazel, who will lead the traditional season-closing performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. … Jaap van Zweden, Lionel Bringuier, and Pablo Heras-Casado, as well as BSO assistant conductor Sean Newhouse, will all make their conducting debuts with the orchestra.”
