North Carolina’s Brevard Music Center will kick off its 2018 Leonard Bernstein centennial programming on June 24, during the opening weekend of the Brevard Music Festival, with Artistic Director Keith Lockhart conducting five of the composer’s scores for Broadway, orchestra, and ballet. Bernstein events will continue throughout the festival, with a program of music by Bernstein and other American composers (July 9); a free “Leonard Bernstein: An American Icon” lecture by Joseph Horowitz at Transylvania County Library (July 12); performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Symphony No. 2 (“Age of Anxiety”), with the Greenville Chorale (July 13); West Side Story in concert, featuring a screening of the movie with full symphony orchestra performing Bernstein’s score (July 14); a multimedia program about Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts (July 15); two performances of Candide (July 26, 28); and a performance of Bernstein’s Mass with musicians, singers, and dancers (Aug. 5).
