“With coronavirus keeping people isolated at home and scary headlines flying … two young children in Columbus’ Clintonville neighborhood this week [held] an impromptu cello concert at the home of a dear 78-year-old neighbor,” writes Holly Zachariah in Thursday’s (3/19) Columbus Dispatch (OH). “Taran Tien, who is all of 9 years old, pulled on his best suit. Sister Calliope, who is 6 … fixed herself up in her party dress. And off they went … each carrying their cello so that they could play a full concert promptly at noon on their neighbor’s large porch…. Helena Schlam is, at her children’s insistence, staying cloistered at home these days…. For more than a half an hour, Taran and Calliope made it through some of Suzuki Book 1 and a bit of Suzuki Book 2 … from a Bach minuet to ‘Go Tell Aunt Rhody.’ … Schlam’s porch is large, so everyone could keep a safe distance away. The children … are home all day like everyone else now. Their [at-home] lesson included a research project on classical musician Yo-Yo Ma … some biodiversity studies for science, and then the concert….’This was a delightful break for all of us … a real gift,’ said Schlam.”
