“The Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association has canceled all its programs scheduled for Sept. 17 through Dec. 23 due to the coronavirus,” writes Howard Reich in Thursday’s (7/16) Chicago Tribune. “These include CSO concerts, Symphony Center Presents, MusicNOW, Civic Orchestra of Chicago concerts and public programs presented by the Negaunee Music Institute…. ‘With the COVID-10 pandemic and its related restrictions on public gatherings still in place and our ongoing priority to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, musicians and staff, we reached the conclusion that it was not possible to move forward with the programs we had originally planned for the fall,’ said CSOA President Jeff Alexander in a statement. ‘As we look ahead and make plans for ensemble concerts for the fall, we are also eager for the day when maestro [Riccardo] Muti and the full orchestra can come together again to share music with local, national and international audiences.’ The institution will continue to present online events through its CSO From Home portal, cso.org/fromhome, and archival performances on its Youtube channel. The CSOA’s Music Ahead campaign, created to respond to the current crisis has raised $5.4 million in donations, including $1.3 million in donated tickets as of June 30.”
