This March, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with Cincinnati’s MusicNOW Festival to present two programs that will include world premieres and feature orchestral musicians playing side-by-side with the indie rock band The National. On March 13 at Music Hall, the orchestra will perform the world premiere of Lo by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, featuring Shaw as violin soloist. That concert will also feature musicians from The National performing alongside the CSO, as well as performances of Varèse’s Tuning Up, Christopher Rouse’s The Infernal Machine, and John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine. The following evening will feature a world premiere by Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason, along with Selections from “Planetarium” for orchestra by Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, and Bryce Dessner; and David Lang’s man made, featuring the ensemble So Percussion. MusicNOW was founded in 2006 by Bryce Dessner; this is the second year the CSO has presented music in collaboration with MusicNOW. “The CSO’s collaboration with MusicNOW last year was one of highlights of my career,” said CSO Music Director Louis Langrée. “The fusion of MusicNOW and the full Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is an experiment nothing short of extraordinary.”
