Music Director Louis Langrée leads the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
“At the height of another global crisis, World War II, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra commissioned fanfares to lift the spirits of Americans and support the Allied efforts,” writes Janelle Gelfand in Wednesday’s (5/6) Cincinnati Business Courier. “Now, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the CSO and Cincinnati Pops announced on Wednesday that it will commission more than a dozen composers to write one-minute fanfares … for solo instruments…. Spearheaded by CSO music director Louis Langrée and Pops conductor John Morris Russell, The Fanfare Project will feature works by 13 composers in the first wave, with additional artists to be announced. The inspiration for the project is Copland’s ‘Fanfare for the Common Man,’ commissioned in 1942 by CSO [and premiered] on March 12, 1943…. The world premieres will be video-recorded by the soloists from their homes and will be released one-by-one over the coming weeks, along with the score, at cincinnatisynphony.org/fanfareproject and on social media…. Each composer … will choose a CSO or Pops musician or other soloist with whom they will collaborate for the piece.” The initial group of composers includes Peter Boyer, Bryce Dessner, Laura Karpman, Matthias Pintscher, Caroline Shaw, Georgia Stitt, Tyshawn Sorey, and Du Yun.
