“The Cleveland Orchestra’s centennial is still three years away, but the 10th anniversary of its Miami residency is right around the corner. And it’s going to be special,” writes Zachary Lewis in Sunday’s (3/8) Plain Dealer (Cleveland). “Very clear in the 2015-16 Miami season announced Sunday is a desire by the orchestra to celebrate its first decade in South Florida, to mark the occasion with an array of special guests and music. Novel elements in its coming year at the Arsht Center include the premiere of a newly commissioned work by Avner Dorman … and a gala concert under music director Franz Welser-Möst featuring soprano Renée Fleming…. Additionally, the orchestra will give two performances of ‘Beethoven Lives Upstairs,’ a time-tested program for children exploring the composer’s life and work. Those will be led by assistant conductor Brett Mitchell.” The 2015-16 Miami residency will open November 13-14, with Giancarlo Guerrero leading works by Chavez, Shostakovich, and Saint-Saëns. Welser-Möst will lead concerts in January, and Guerrero will lead the final concerts March 17-19. Solo artists will include cellist Johannes Moser and pianists Leif Ove Andsnes and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as well as William Preucil and Mark Kosower, the orchestra’s concertmaster and principal cellist.
