In Friday’s (4/4) Plain Dealer (Cleveland), Zachary Lewis writes, “Major change is afoot in the communications department of the Cleveland Orchestra. Ana Papakhian, head of the department since 2008, is leaving for the Music Academy of the West, a school and summer festival in Santa Barbara, Calif. Her new title will be vice president of marketing and communications. Her duties commence June 2, and will entail oversight of external communications and media relations, marketing and ticketing…. In some ways, the move is a homecoming. Following vocal studies at Indiana University (where the Cleveland Orchestra maintains a biennial residency), Papakhian began her career in arts administration as personal assistant to famed mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, who serves as director of the Academy’s voice program.” At the Cleveland Orchestra Papakhian has been “key to an ongoing era of dramatic change at the orchestra. During her tenure, the ensemble launched new concert series, a Center for Future Audiences, and a neighborhood residency program…. Papakhian ‘is clearly an individual of great vision and energy,’ said Music Academy president Scott Reed.”
