In Wednesday’s (10/28) Star-Ledger (Newark, New Jersey), Peggy McGlone writes, “After months of financial struggle, the Colonial Symphony of Morristown announced today it was closing down. In a letter to musicians, supporters and subscribers, board president Robert McCoy blamed the ongoing recession. The orchestra’s mission ‘has become jeopardized in recent years due to diminishing resources,’ he wrote. Faced with no ‘reasonable alternatives,’ the board decided to close down. The 62-year-old orchestra, which operates on a budget just under $250,000, has performed at the Community Theatre at the Mayo Center for the Arts in Morristown and the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University in Madison. Last season, it presented four concerts, including a holiday event, and had 150-175 subscribers, according to its executive director. Principal conductor and music director Paul Hostetter resigned this summer to take a teaching job at a university in Georgia. Talks with the Westfield Symphony Orchestra about merging did not end successfully.”
