Du Yun has been awarded the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Fourth Annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for Female Composers. The award carries with it a $10,000 prize; a one-month residency at the Ucross Foundation artist’s retreat in Wyoming; and the world premiere of a work during the DSO’s 2010-11 season. Among Du Yun’s current projects are a string quartet; a dance and multimedia project with Moving Theater at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City; a chamber opera with composer Ken Ueno, for the Flea Theater in New York City in May 2010; a score for Shahzia Sikander’s video work Interstitial; and a multimedia collaboration with visual artist David Michalek for flutist Claire Chase. The Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award is an annual symphony-sponsored award competition for women composers, funded by an anonymous donor. Previous winners include Stacy Garrop, Margaret Brouwer, and Cindy McTee.
