In Tuesday’s (2/7) Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon), Barbara Curtin writes, “The fledgling Salem Philharmonia Orchestra will hold its first rehearsal tonight at Chemeketa Community College. Players, board members and supporters are welcome, according to director Sean Paul Mills. He’s forming the group because the Salem area lacks opportunities for instrumentalists of varying abilities to perform traditional symphonic works, he said. … The Albany resident is best known as the director of the Willamette Valley Symphony, based in Corvallis, and as a music teacher at Chemeketa Community College. He’s a graduate of the University of Oregon (bachelor of music and master of music degrees), and the University of Iowa (doctor of musical arts in violoncello performance and pedagogy). The new orchestra will use donated space at Chemeketa Community College for rehearsals and performances. Music and equipment will mostly be borrowed from other orchestras. … Mills expects about 40 musicians at the first rehearsal, thanks to extensive emails and word of mouth. He hopes to build to about 75 players.”
