The Conductors Guild has just concluded its 31st annual conference, co-hosted this year by the Berklee College of Music and the Boston Symphony Orchestra from June 12 to 14. Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops, served as keynote speaker, and Helmuth Rilling was presented with the 2015 Max Rudolf Award, presented bianually in recognition of outstanding achievement as a conductor and pedagogue, and significant service to the profession. The conference included a diversity panel, and sessions included “Software as Artistic Partner: The Click Track Is Dead” and “The Joys sand Perils of Being a Staff Conductor.” Presenters included Dennis Alves, the Boston Pops’ director of artistic planning; Boston Symphony archivist Bridget Carr; Benjamin Zander, conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra; and pop composer/songwriter/session musician George S. Clinton. The Conductors Guild, founded in 1975, publishes Journal of the Conductors Guild and the online newsletter Podium Notes. In addition to the annual conference, the Guild holds workshops and mentoring and consulting opportunities throughout the year.
