The Cultural Data Project has published its first newsletter, Data Matters, as a way to keep its arts partners and colleagues informed about the CDP and its resources. The title of the newsletter, to be published biannually, is a reference to the organization’s belief that data can build a strong arts and cultural sector by helping arts groups improve operations and make informed decisions. The Cultural Data Project was launched in Pennsylvania in 2004 by a group of Pennsylvania funders who envisioned CDP as a means of streamlining the grant application process for their 400 applicants and building a database of reliable information on the arts and cultural sector. As of May 2010, the CDP operates in eight states (California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania); it expects to operate in up to 22 states by 2014, engaging up to 70 percent of all arts and cultural organizations nationwide that apply for private or public funding. The inaugural newsletter can be read here.
