The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has launched Full STEAM Ahead, an initiative promoting arts and equal opportunity for girls in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). The initiative is designed by a group of senior women business executives from Capitol One, AT&T, and Texas Instruments along with Dallas leaders to promote arts education and equality for girls in STEAM subjects. Full STEAM Ahead will kick off with a November 5 benefit concert at Meyerson Symphony Center featuring the women of the Dallas Symphony led by Principal Guest Conductor Gemma New and Assistant Conductor Katharina Wincor. The concert will feature Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst for strings; the “Autumn” movement from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with violinist Eunice Keem; Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Pizzicato” Polka; and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”). DSO President and CEO Kim Noltemy says she hopes that the program will “inspire young women to explore studies and careers in STEAM, and we hope that events such as this … will spark curiosity into the role of arts in a well-rounded education.”
