In Thursday’s (3/7) Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell writes, “Starting Monday, audiences in the Netherlands, Austria and Germany will get their first live experiences of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under music director Jaap van Zweden. The two-week European tour is the DSO’s first since 2003 and its first under van Zweden, now in his fifth season here. Stops will include Amsterdam’s famed Concertgebouw, where van Zweden was concertmaster of the resident Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for 16 years, the Vienna Konzerthaus and halls in Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Hannover. The orchestra is alternating two programs on the tour. One comprises the Violin Concerto of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Mahler’s Sixth Symphony; the other includes the Korngold plus the Prelude and ‘Liebestod’ from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, the ‘Elegy’ extracted from Steven Stucky’s August 4, 1964 and a suite from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. … Because of the large instrumental demands of the Mahler—among other things, it requires eight horns, plus string contingents large enough to balance—the DSO is taking 110 musicians on the tour, including quite a few extra players. Some 16 management and logistics personnel and stagehands will fill out the tour, which leaves Dallas on Friday.”
