In Wednesday’s (2/2) Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell writes, “The Dallas Symphony Orchestra has named not one but two concertmasters, effective Sept. 1. Alexander Kerr, who will hold the primary title, succeeded DSO music director Jaap van Zweden as concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. In 2005, after 10 years with the Dutch orchestra, he returned to the United States as professor of violin at Indiana University in Bloomington. Named as co-concertmaster is Nathan Olson, currently concertmaster of the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Ohio. Kerr (pronounced ‘car’) will keep his position at IU but will perform with the DSO for 12 weeks in the 2011-12 season and 16 weeks the next season, coinciding with weeks van Zweden is on the podium. During those weeks, Olson will sit in the second chair at the first stand. When Kerr is away, Olson will sit in the concertmaster’s chair—‘at least 30 weeks,’ Olson said. … After Emanuel Borok retired from the position in August, the DSO has had a series of guest concertmasters this season, including Kerr and Olson.”
