“SOLUNA, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s annual International Music & Arts Festival … is running now through early June,” writes Jennifer Smart in Tuesday’s (5/16) Dallas Observer. In contrast to the previous festivals, “This year’s Soluna doesn’t feature any big-name commissions or international pop stars…. Instead, SOLUNA seems to be coalescing around the art and artists Dallas is already familiar with…. The two-part performance [Dallas Dreams Big] features original work culled from two months of workshops at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and the South Dallas Cultural Center, including spoken-word poetry.… Passport to the Park, a multidisciplinary day of family-friendly performances and activities, returns … Music director Jaap Van Zweden … will [conduct] Prokofiev’s masterful 5th Symphony … and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius…. The Prokofiev … features a special multimedia first act, which promises to transport audiences to World War II Soviet Russia, and Gerontius … will showcase the Dallas Symphony Chorus’ 200 members…. DreamSpace, a site-specific, interactive audio-visual installation, will illustrate the vertical nature of dream time through video, dance and an elaborate voice recognition system…. In tandem with the festival’s intention to promote cross- and multidisciplinary works of art, that makes this year’s SOLUNA the most accessible yet.”
