Ohio’s Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will perform the world premiere of The New Four Seasons on its December 7 concert at the Schuster Center, led by conductor Patrick Reynolds. The crowdsourced work is the culmination of a yearlong project headed by Reynolds and Austin Jaquith, a composition professor at Cedarville University. Following a YouTube invitation to pre-college, Dayton-area students to submit original melodies for the project, the orchestra selected the winning melodies in May 2014. Over the summer, composition students from Cedarville University, University of Dayton, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music orchestrated the melodies into a five-moment piece. The work will be performed during a program of Russian music that includes Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Mussorgsky’s Dawn on the Moskva River, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 (“Little Russian”).
