Alondra de la Parra, founder and music director of the New York-based Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, will lead her first program with the Chicago Sinfonietta this month when she conducts a program entitled “Las Américas.” The concert is being presented in collaboration with the Mexican Civic Society of Illinois and the Consulate General of Mexico in Chicago as part of “Mexico 2010,” a yearlong series of Chicago-based cultural events celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Tony Rymer, the first-prize senior division winner of the 2009 Sphinx Competition for Young Black & Latino String Players, will perform with the orchestra in the March 28 and 29 concerts, which will feature Astor Piazzolla’s Tangazo, Arturo Marquez’s Espejos en la Arena for cello and orchestra, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.
