An article in Wednesday’s (4/11) Des Moines Register (Iowa) states, “This weekend Joseph Giunta will conduct a program comprising Iowa native Michael Daugherty’s ‘Red Cape Tango,’ Edouard Lalo’s Cello Concerto and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, performed with cellist Joshua Roman. We met up to chat one on one over coffee at Java Joe’s in downtown Des Moines.” On orchestras collaborating with pop artists or performing video game music, Giunta comments, “There’s no zip codes, no boundaries, no gender, no ethnicity in music. It’s either good or great, bad or mediocre. It’s all about communication regardless of what sort of performing art you’re in.” Regarding Daugherty’s Red Cape Tango from his Superman-inspired Metropolis Symphony, Giunta says, “You take a Joe Schwantner or a Libby Larsen or a Steve Heitzeg or Philip Glass, these are people who are writing and being inspired by things that are happening in their lives. Michael Daugherty is a case where he grew up in Cedar Rapids and was completely influenced by comic books and television shows. … ‘Red Cape Tango’ is a great piece of music. There are sounds in there that those of us who read the comic books or saw the movies will bring things back so vividly.”
