In Tuesday’s (12/13) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes, “The Detroit Symphony Orchestra canceled this week’s six ‘Home for the Holidays’ concerts today due to the ongoing 11-week strike by its musicians. A performance by the popular Canadian Brass scheduled for Dec. 21 has also been postponed until next December because the group indicated to DSO officials that it may not cross the picket line in the wake of a letter from the musicians’ union threatening fines if they performed. The DSO made the decision to postpone the concert in consultation with the group to avoid a repeat of Sunday, when the band Bowfire canceled at the last minute because it didn’t want to cross the picket line, leaving the 1,300 people expected to attend with little notice. … Including this week’s ‘Home for the Holidays’ concerts that had been scheduled Thursday through Sunday, the strike has now claimed 40 concerts since the start of the season in October—more than a third of the season—and resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in ticket revenue.”
