For its annual series of free concerts throughout southeastern Michigan, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra has tweaked the process by which those communities are selected for the 2012-13 season. The orchestra is inviting communities within a 45-mile radius of Detroit’s Orchestra Hall to nominate themselves to host a free DSO community concert during the week of September 17, 2012. Organizations including schools, places of worship, and community centers—and individuals partnering with those venues—may nominate themselves to host one of the concerts by submitting a nomination to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5 p.m. on May 21. Nomination instructions are available at www.dso.org/dtemusic. Teddy Abrams, the DSO’s new assistant conductor, will conduct the concerts; communities selected for free concerts will be announced on June 5. One of the venues will also receive a full DSO residency during the 2012-13 season, to include events such as a chamber-music performance, senior engagement concert, school visit, hospital performance, and library visit.
