In Friday’s (1/18) The Voice (Macomb and St. Clair, Michigan), Jeri Packer writes, “After playing to a sold-out crowd at East China Performing Arts Center [in East China, Michigan] on Jan. 11, Detroit Symphony Orchestra organizers were already booking another concert for the next year. The classical musicians will be back again on the same date, but a different year—Jan. 11, 2014. Marine City Music Festival Inc. Chair Judy White knew there would be enough classical music-lovers in St. Clair County to fill the PAC. ‘There is this audience that’s always existed in the county,’ she said. … The audience at the recent concert at the PAC sensed immediately they were in for a treat. ‘When Slatkin and the orchestra finished the first piece on the program, the audience not only applauded, but shouted—“bravo”—they were so happy,’ White said. … There were also some first-timers from all age groups. Students got a $5 discount—tickets were $30 instead of $35. White applied for a DTE [Energy] grant to cover some of the expenses, to keep prices as low as possible.”
