In Wednesday’s (5/26) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker reports, “Leonard Slatkin’s dance card has just gotten more crowded. The music director of the Detroit Symphony has accepted the post of music director of the Orchestre National de Lyon, an important French orchestra, effective with the 2011-12 season. It’s not unusual for leading conductors to hold more than one post on different continents, and Slatkin’s job in Lyon does not portend a cut back in his allegiance to the DSO. In February, Slatkin, 65, signed a two-year extension to his original three-year contract with the DSO that will keep the conductor anchored in Detroit at least through 2012-13. … Slatkin, who lives in Troy, leads 16 weeks of DSO concerts a year. He plans to spend 12 weeks with the Lyon orchestra and three weeks in his ongoing role as principal guest conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Though adding another major post to his portfolio might add to his work load on one level, on another it promises to streamline his activities. Most of his fall and winter season will now be accounted for by work in three cities.”
