In Sunday’s (9/1) Albuquerque Journal (New Mexico), David Steinberg writes, “You can tell by its title—‘From Rock to Brahms’—that the Saturday, Sept. 7 New Mexico Philharmonic concert is unusual. Unusual, but with a purpose: To encourage people to give the symphony orchestra, any symphony orchestra, a try. Leading the foray into heavy metal and classical is award-winning Chicago violinist Rachel Barton Pine. On the rock side, Pine and the orchestra will offer two medleys with music popularized by Van Halen, AC/DC, and Black Sabbath and its former lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.… Pine doesn’t consider herself a crossover artist. ‘When I play electric violin in rock music, when I play my own arrangements of rock songs on acoustic violin, and when I play classical music I am not trying to build an audience for that in-between (mix of music). But I am using rock music to lead people to the violin and introduce classical music to them,’ Pine said.… With the philharmonic, Pine will play Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto.… Besides soloing with orchestras, Pine plays in a Baroque chamber music ensemble … and in a heavy metal band.”
