“Gustavo Dudamel took a trip to Harvard last weekend, as part of Deborah Borda’s term as a Hauser Visiting Leader at Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School,” writes Nicholas Beard on Wednesday (11/9) at Musicalamerica.com (subscription required). “In addition to discussing the issue of arts, education, and social responsibility in a public forum with Borda, he led two rehearsals, one with Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra and one with the Longy Sistema Side by Side Orchestra, which is composed of El Sistema student musicians from the Boston area. At the weekend’s close he was presented with Harvard’s annual Luise Vosgerchian Teaching Award, which honors a nationally recognized educator and is administered by the Office for the Arts at Harvard’s Learning From Performers program. The award, which carries an honorarium,” is named after Harvard music professor Luise Vosgerchian (1929-2016). “Past recipients include Marin Alsop, Robert Mann, Gustav Meier, Phyllis Curtin, and Aaron Dworkin. The award recognizes “ability to motivate in a positive and creative way; a sincere interest in the development of the whole person; and the ability to present musical knowledge in a way that is applicable to other disciplines.”
