In Thursday’s (9/25) Virginian-Pilot, Rashod Ollison reports, “When he arrived four years ago … as president of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Eric Borenstein faced a $2 million debt that was deepening fast. He eventually pulled the organization out of the red, stabilizing it as ticket sales and donations increased. But Wednesday, after a successful tenure at the VSO, Borenstein stepped down to return to New York, where his career began. ‘It was an honor and privilege to lead the Virginia Symphony and I am very proud of the organization’s achievements over the last four years,’ Borenstein said in a news release issued by the symphony.” Borenstein oversaw such initiatives as VSOcean at the Oceanfront, a pops series at the Ferguson Center in Newport News, and a statewide tour that included the opening concert at a new performing arts center in Blacksburg. “ ‘I have enjoyed working with Eric these past four years,’ JoAnn Falletta, music director of the Virginia Symphony, said in the press release. ‘Eric brought to our orchestra a level of professionalism and respect that was greatly appreciated.’ … Executive director positions with the Cape Cod Symphony in Massachusetts and the Erie Philharmonic preceded Borenstein’s time in Virginia.” A search for Borenstein’s successor has begun; serving as interim president and executive director is VSO Vice President of Development Karen Philion.
