In Thursday’s (1/30) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Pennsylvania), Dave Zuchowski writes, “Every February, the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra schedules a concert near Valentine’s Day. While this year is no exception, the orchestra is adding something extra to its Gershwin Valentine concert on Saturday” at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the orchestra’s main performance venue. “For the first time, the orchestra [is taking] part in Orchestras Feeding America, along with 250 other orchestras across the nation. The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra will hold a pre-concert food drive to benefit the Westmoreland County Food Bank. ‘There’s been a change in our philosophy and outlook in the way we see the community,’ said Morrie Brand, managing director of the orchestra…. ‘We’re looking at more ways to benefit the community.’ … The League of American Orchestras launched Orchestras Feeding America in 2009. Since then, the organization has collected nearly 450,000 pounds of food for low-income recipients…. The Westmoreland County Food Bank will provide the containers for the food donations and pick them up on Monday. The donated food items … will be distributed to those in need at 46 food pantries throughout the county.… The food bank serves 15,000 low-income residents, including 4,000 children and more than 2,000 seniors.”
