The Greenville Symphony Orchestra in South Carolina reports that an anonymous donor has issued a challenge grant for the orchestra’s 2009-10 season. The grant will match, dollar for dollar, any new gift to the orchestra’s annual “Encore” fund; it will also match any increase in a donor’s gift from the previous season, up to $75,000, with a potential of up to $150,000 in incremental income. “This extraordinarily generous grant shows the deep commitment the Greenville community has to its orchestra,” said Executive Director Ken Johnson. “Historically, the symphony’s donors have been loyal in good times and bad…. Not only do we need new donors, but also we need our current donors to consider additional support for us this season.” The GSO, founded in 1948, performs approximately 35 concerts per season under Music Director Edvard Tchivzhel; it also provides several educational program for area schoolchildren.
