“Summerfair can be loud, and the options are many for a multi-day event that can seem like controlled chaos,” writes Tyler Miles in Saturday’s (6/27) Sentinel (Carlisle, PA). “So where do you go to find a reprieve, yet still partake in the festivities? The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra may have an idea. For the past 30 years, the orchestra has serenaded festivalgoers with light classics, arrangements of popular Broadway tunes and patriotic music…. [Executive Director Jeff] Woodruff said that … Rush Campus at Dickinson College can see anywhere between 4,000 and 5,000 people lounging on blankets or unfolding lawn chairs to see the concert, which serves as Summerfair’s main event, at 7:30 p.m. on July 5.… Woodruff said that the orchestra uses between 55 and 60 musicians for the event…. [Concertmaster] Peter Sirotin … believes the sense of community is what attracts people each year to festivals such as Summerfair. ‘I enjoy doing this every year,’ he said. ‘Families come together, it’s a setting where you play and people just sit on the lawn, so it’s very festive. A lot of musicians enjoy it because of that.’ ” Summerfair takes place from June 25 to July 25 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
