Andrés Orozco-Estrada, music director of the Houston Symphony, will give a preconcert talk in Spanish before the orchestra’s November 16 performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. Colombian conductor Carlos Andrés Botero will serve as co-host for the talk, which is a first for the orchestra and comes in addition to a three-concert “Musically Speaking with Andrés” English-commentary series at its January, March, and May concerts this season at Stude Concert Hall. The orchestra noted in a press release that Orozco-Estrada’s goal with the series is to “deepen connections between the audience, the music, and the makers of music” and to connect “more of Houston’s diverse population to the power of live symphonic music.” Orozco-Estrada—born in Colombia and trained in Vienna—began as Houston Symphony’s music director in September 2014. He is also chief conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and will become principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2015-16.
