The Houston Symphony has announced that Alondra de la Parra will conduct its free September 13 concert at Jones Hall celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The annual “Chevron Fiesta Sinfónica Familiar”— presented by the orchestra jointly with the Consulate General of Mexico and Chevron—this year is part of a series of events leading to Mexico’s Bicentennial in 2010. The program will include Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonía India; Piazzolla’s Tangazo; Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas; Márquez’s Danzón No. 2; Ibarra’s Sinfonía No. 2 (Las Antesalas del Sueño); and Revueltas’s Sensemayá. De la Parra, a native of Mexico, is founder and music director of the New York-based Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas; she was appointed Cultural Ambassador for Mexican Tourism in spring 2009. She made her Houston Symphony conducting debut in September 2008, conducting that year’s “Fiesta Sinfónica Familiar” concert.
