The Houston Symphony Orchestra has announced a new Community-Embedded Musicians program designed to embed musicians deeply in the community and to better represent and serve the diverse population of Greater Houston. Beginning in the 2015-16 season, the orchestra will hire up to four string players whose primary role is to interact in Houston schools, neighborhoods, and health-care settings as teaching artists and performers, while also performing on stage with members of the Houston Symphony in approximately 25 concerts each year. Community-Embedded Musicians will be full-time, permanent, salaried employees of the symphony and will be part of the cadre of musicians who appear on stage and in the community. The four new positions will be open to violinists, violists, cellists, and double bassists of all backgrounds who demonstrate a passion for education and community-engagement work. The Houston Symphony encourages qualified candidates of diverse ethnic backgrounds to apply; bilingual speaking skills are a plus. The deadline to apply is June 19, 2015.
