“The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts made its fundraising goal for The Reach, its three-pavilion expansion … on Sept. 5, just before the Reach opening festival was set to begin Sept. 7,” writes Rebecca Cooper in Tuesday’s (9/10) Washington Business Journal (D.C.). “It’s still taking in more; the Reach has now surpassed its $250 million fundraising goal…. The goal was met through a combination of gifts of all sizes [from] co-founder David Rubenstein’s initial $50 million commitment, down to small donations from individuals.… The Kennedy Center decided to mark the [Reach opening] occasion with 16 days of free events, everything from early morning yoga classes and make-your-own-movie workshops to live National Symphony Orchestra performances and a screening of Beyoncé’s ‘Homecoming’ with a live performance by the Howard University ‘Showtime’ marching band…. After taking a week for a breath, Kennedy Center staff will set out to the work of programming the Reach all the time…. Already on the docket for the Reach space … are … programming around ‘Merce Cunningham at 100,’ a contemporary dance celebration [at] the Kennedy Center … and … Club at Studio K … with live DJs in one of the Reach’s studio spaces.”
