“The 88th season of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra has recently been announced, and it has all the hallmarks of what has made the LSO so wildly popular over the past decade,” writes Ken Glickman in Thursday’s (7/20) Lansing State Journal (Michigan). Music Director Timothy Muffitt “always throws in pieces that are new and refreshing and recently has been bringing back concert artists who were born in the Lansing area.” The season-opening October concert featuring Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique includes “two new pieces to Lansing audiences, the Marshner ‘Der Vampyr Overture’ … and ‘El Amor Brujo’ by Falla.” For a January program of Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2, “Muffitt has brought back … French hornist David Cooper who was born and raised in Grand Ledge, and just took the coveted post of principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic…. Principal cellist Hong Hong [will be spotlighted] on March 24 in the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No 3. Also, Muffitt will pay tribute to MSU composer James Niblock’s 100th birthday with his ‘Three American Dances’… [In May] Muffitt is programming … ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ … [and] a new work by MSU composer Zhou Tian called ‘Poem From a Vanished Time.’ ”
