On February 27, Carlos Miguel Prieto will conduct the Louisiana Philharmonic’s debut at Carnegie Hall, a program of music by Philip Glass and Silvestre Rivueltas. The concert will feature two works inspired by Latin American locations: Glass’s Days and Nights in Rocinha, a tribute to a Rio de Janeiro favela, and Rivueltas’s La noche de los Mayas Suite, drawn from the composer’s now-lost 1939 film score. The orchestra also will perform Glass’s Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra, showcasing soloists Jim Atwood and Paul Yancich, who will play nine timpani between them. The LPO’s debut concert at Carnegie Hall marks its first return to New York City since New Orleans’ recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The orchestra last appeared in New York in 2005, performing in a joint concert with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center, benefitting LPO musicians affected by the disaster. The 2017-18 season marks Prieto’s twelfth as music director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México, and in July 2018 he will conduct NYO2, Carnegie Hall’s annual summer program for young American instrumentalists.
